New B and B Site - The Different Purposes of Web Advertising

Our next Bed and Breakfast website is well underway. We've now received all the artwork to be used, and will be combining this with the copy our client has written.

On this occasion we are helping to provide some contextual links to other local websites that may interest guests, including places to eat and drink, local places of interest and other leisure activities. Early results are looking promising.

Making sites for Bed and Breakfasts reveals an and subtle difference in the purpose of a website in these cases. With millions of B&B website listings on the internet, our clients know that there is a very slim chance of being listed highly on search engines in their own right [type in B&B into Google and you'll get the picture]. We do our best, and with certain search combinations (B&B + local village / town) they don't do too badly. But the reality is that their ten page site is never going to compete with the thousands of pages on the big B&B directory sites which fill the top pages of most search engine lists.

This is not a problem however as the purpose of these sites is not to provide the sole means of people finding and choosing the B&B; instead it is the personal vehicle for the B&B owners to present their accommodation in their way and to their best advantage. It supplements the listings they already have in tourist directories or other specialist online directories. Visitors to their website will probably already know about them from another source or recommendation and that means that the B&B website is there to connect with, convince, and entice the visitor to become a guest.

In a market where the search engine is often believed [with good cause] to be king, it's important to recognise that there are many ways to use the internet to promote business, and that in combination with other media, a website doesn't always have to go head-to-head with millions of other similar sites in a race for high search engine rankings in order to be a success.
